BULLETIN: Announcing, Launching and Starting the Canadian Charity

We are delighted that the time has arrived that we can now announce, launch and start our new Canadian Registered Charity; the Haley-McCready Outreach and Development Fund. For a summary introduction and a brief description of the Haley-McCready Outreach and Deverlopment Fund, please review the About section of our developing website.

The Haley-McCready Outreach and Development Fund – Canada was developed keeping in mind the existing realities in Burundi. The Burundian realities include being one of the poorest countries in the world; a very small, densely-populated, high birth rate country with a very young population of about 12 million people. More than 90% percent of the people live in rural areas as farmers with very small, overworked, hand-cultivated plots, using low production, traditional methods. As an underdeveloped, agrarian country, Burundi has extreme poverty, famine, hunger, serious food insecurity and tremendous malnutrition (a 60% chronic malnutrition rate among children). It is easily understood that the greatest need for development in Burundi is agriculture development and the greatest opportunity for development in Burundi is agriculture development. Accordingly, the Haley-McCready Outreach and Development Fund plans to contribute to agriculture development and expects to give priority to agriculture development projects that involve crop cultivation and animal husbandry.

In 2018, the Haley-McCready Outreach and Development Fund became a Registered Charity. As we were preparing to get started, the COVID-19 global pandemic and its travel restrictions seriously delayed our plans. We now believe we can responsibly start to pursue our primary purpose.

  • To relieve poverty by providing development grants for poor, uneducated and unemployed community people in Burundi.

The governance, fundraising and funds distribution will take place in Canada and be the responsibility of the Canadian Board of Directors. Following a Call for Proposals, any student or graduate of Hope Africa Unversity can prepare and submit a proposed development project. The Burundi Advisory Committee will review the propsals and make recommendations to Board of Directors on providing grants to the best of the proposed projects. The Directors will make all of the decisions on awarding and providing grants and the money will be distributed by installment to the development projects in Burundi.

Since our announcement and the launch are taking place at the same time that our first Call for Proposals is being announced, posted and distributed, we are including it here for your information and the attention of students and graduates of Hope Africa University.

HALEY-McCREADY OUTREACH AND DEVELOPMENT FUND – Canada

Call for Proposals

Submission Deadline: January 17, 2022

The Haley-McCready Outreach and Development Fund – Canada provides grants to students and graduates of Hope Africa University who submit a proposal; a student-generated project proposal having a main purpose to relieve poverty for poor, uneducated and unemployed indigenous community people in Burundi. Any student or graduate of Hope Africa University, who is connected with any department and who is willing to be a long term, volunteer Project Manager is eligible to apply. Interested students and graduates are encouraged to submit a proposal describing their proposed project plans and the anticipated, sustainable results.

Applicants must clearly explain how their proposed project will contribute to the development of capacity among the project beneficiaries. The projects should be innovative, address obvious needs and have the potential to produce significant, lasting change. The proposals must clearly describe how the objectives will be met; how the beneficiaries will be meaningfully involved; how the development benefits will be shared and extended to others (needy individuals, families and community members); how the project will become self-supporting and self-sufficient; and, how the project beneficiaries will become self-sustaining, self-managing and self-governing through a project association; their own development organization.

The grants are for the Burundian equivalent of $1,500.00 USD. The initial funded start-up, implementation period will normally be for about 12 months but the projects are expected to become self-sustaining and continue long into the future.

  • All applications or proposals must be submitted in English to John McCready as e-mail Word file attachments, using the Canadian 2022 proposal outline and format.
  • All applications must be submitted by January 17, 2022.
